The Reason Why Your Dog Jumps and How to Stop it

How excited are you when you come home from work to see your dog? You have a high-pitched voice and walk straight to them, whether they are loose or in a crate. Yet, you find yourself getting trampled back out the door as soon as they start to jump. Why does this happen?

Have you ever thought about how you are interacting with your dog?

Your dog’s behaviour of jumping was most likely reinforced by your own behaviour. When you come home all excited, your dog thinks it’s time to party - which it becomes when you ereward it. When your dog is looking forward to that party, it can become a trigger of anxiety whilst waiting for you.

However, when you change your interactions with your dog when you arrive home, your dog will change too. Through consistency and clarity you can turn the habit created into a new behaviour that you like to see.

A calm welcome is important and helpful for your dog and yourself.

Coming home shouldn’t be a trigger for party time, instead coming home should be calm and quiet while you have time to go pee or unload the groceries out of your car. When you are consistent in ignoring your dog when you arrive home, they will stay settled but aware when you pass by.

The party shouldn’t start when you walk through the door, but any time after when you choose.
